A fleet of 500 electric heavy trucks is no longer just a vehicle trial. It is an operating-system problem.
Einride has announced plans to deploy 500 Tesla Semis in North America over 24 months, starting in September 2026. The planned fleet will serve customers including Amazon and connect to Einride’s Saga AI freight platform.
The eye-catching number is the trucks. The more transferable lesson for Australian operators is everything required around them.
At fleet scale, route allocation can depend on state of charge, charger availability, electricity pricing, driver hours and the next freight task. A depot may have to operate partly like a transport yard and partly like an energy system.
That means the electric transition will not be decided only by which truck has the biggest battery. Utilisation, charging orchestration and software may be just as important to the economics.
