When service and branding is everything then getting the right equipment is paramount. Burrell’s Soils & Sands Pty Ltd based in Newcastle know this all too well. The family owned and operated business has 84 years of business under its belt.
Any business that was established in 1932 and is still prospering today is doing something right.
Burrell’s offer a vast range of high-quality landscaping supplies to customers throughout Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and West Lakes providing landscaping products for everything from garden renovations to driveways.
The family company caters for 20kg bags for quick gardening jobs to the biggest commercial projects and has a fleet to accommodate every customer need in between.
In this issue of Australian Custom Trucks we are featuring one of its latest acquisitions, a Kenworth K200 tipper designed for bulk loads.
I must admit I usually don’t see many K200 tippers around at the moment and would be expecting a lot more in a few years when second hand vehicles come off long haul work and into their second life.
The other thing which is noticeably different is that many landscaping supplies business usually run older, less appealing vehicles. This definitely isn’t the image Burrell’s is projecting.
The K200 was bought from Gilbert & Roach Hexham and sent to SLS for the custom work which included from the front customisation of number plate covers, which included a stainless steel and a polycarbonate cover set. The polished front bumper as a swag of lights and has been vinyl wrapped in a clear coat to protect the shine and the bar.
It was fitted with six amber lights on the bottom flat section with a further eight Hella amber lights fitted above and just below the lower grille.

The drop visor has 10" welded corners and was painted on its back side to ensure less glare in the cab. Additional roof lights were also added to make it shine at night.
To add to the look the original exhaust shrouds were exchanged and the load lights chromed.
The Prutsman side mirrors received four amber Hella lights fitted to new mirror backings.
The cab scuffs, upper and lower, step scuffs received five clear/red/amber Hella lights.
The aluminium side step was moved up and shortened to marry up with the tank step.
The truck also received stainless steel steer flares.
To dampen road noise and protect the undercarriage the wheel arches were sprayed with suppressant and the steer mudflaps were modified to suit super single tyres.
Wing panel extensions were put on to marry in with top of cab and painted the same as the cab colour to match. The wing trims also received eight red, fully enclosed, Hella lights.

The air ram 7" stainless steel pipe was shortened to compliment the new exhaust stacks. The stacks received a support bracket and a shroud to cover mounting bracket.
The two 230 litre round tanks housing the hydraulic fluid and AdBlue solution were wrapped in stainless as well as the 2 x 450L diesel tanks.
Grip tape was also applied to the top of all the tanks to add a bit of safety. The stainless strap wraps blends into the wrapped tanks so there is very little contrast.
The tank steps were all removed and replaced with a stainless steel bottom step.
Tank trims were fitted to all the tanks as well as the addition of more Hella lights.
Besides all the customisation it has been expertly scrolled, has lovely signage and the Sloanbuilt trailer sets it off with the deep green paintwork with a simple but elegant design.
This is a working truck however it is designed to look good while it does.
