A new Electric Truck Fire Safety Information Toolkit gives drivers and workshop teams practical material for preparing to work around electric heavy vehicles.
NTRO announced the resources on 8 October. Its project brought together EV FireSafe’s technical review, industry input and educational design by NRSPP at Monash University.
The work received funding through the NHVR’s Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative, supported by the Australian Government.
Know the warning signs and the plan
NTRO says battery thermal runaway can involve intense heat, hazardous gases and delayed ignition or reignition. The toolkit focuses on prevention, recognising trouble, evacuation and passing useful information to emergency responders.
Its fact sheets, posters, videos and presentations cover the workshop, road and depot, giving businesses material to incorporate into training.
For a workshop taking on electric trucks, preparation belongs alongside the equipment purchase: who recognises the warning signs, who raises the alarm and what happens after the vehicle is made safe?
