Volvo’s electric heavy-hauler pushes to 80 tonnes

Battery-electric heavy trucks are moving into territory that only a few years ago looked firmly diesel-only.

At IAA Transportation 2026, Volvo Trucks unveiled a new FH Electric and FH Aero Electric heavy-duty variant designed for gross combination weights of up to 80 tonnes.

The numbers are significant. Volvo says the truck carries 640 kWh of usable battery capacity and can travel up to 450 km at 64 tonnes GCW, or about 420 km at 74–76 tonnes. Megawatt Charging System capability lifts charging power to as much as 680 kW, with a claimed 20–80 per cent recharge in about 36 minutes.

Why it matters

For Australian operators, the interesting part is not simply the headline range. It is the combination of higher combination mass, larger usable battery capacity and charging fast enough to begin fitting around mandated breaks and depot turnaround.

That still leaves the big local questions: tare weight, axle loads, charger availability, grid capacity, heat, long-distance route spacing and what the truck costs per loaded kilometre.

The first markets announced are Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands and Switzerland, with launch scheduled for early 2027. Australia has not been announced.

But an electric prime mover engineered around 80-tonne combinations is a useful marker of where heavy-duty truck development is heading — and of how quickly the old assumption that battery trucks are only for light metropolitan work is being challenged.
